Byron I. Callies MSHS, CHEP, CHSP, CEM, PEM, MEP
Byron Callies completed his undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences) at The George Washington University and his graduate degree (Master of Science in Health Sciences with a concentration in Emergency and Disaster Management) from TUI University. The Board of Certified Healthcare Safety certifies him as a Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) and Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP). He also holds the Michigan Professional Emergency Manager (PEM), IAEM Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) and FEMA Master Exercise Practitioner (MEP) credentials.
Currently, Byron is an associate with Comprehensive Emergency Management Associates. He oversees CEMA’s healthcare and exercise service line. Currently serving a regional hospital in Lansing, MI, he directly manages three Environment of Care function areas: safety, fire safety, and emergency management. As Chairperson for the hospital’s Emergency Management Subcommittee, he coordinates all emergency management-related activities for the medical center. He also provides leadership to the McLaren Healthcare Corporation as chair of the Corporate Emergency Management Committee.
Byron previously served as a Hospital Preparedness Program Regional Bioterrorism Coordinator in Michigan. As the regional coordinator at the onset of this program in 2002, he was instrumental in providing leadership to District 1 organizations and the State of Michigan for preparing communities for a biological weapons incident.
As a Navy SEAL/Special Operations Independent Duty Corpsman while serving ten years on active duty in Navy, Byron was involved with medical planning, curriculum development, and instruction. A certified surgical skills instructor, he provided instruction to Naval Special Warfare medics in combat medicine. He also provided medical skills and preventive medicine training to host nation military personnel. During medical missions, he provided primary care and dental care to the indigenous people of various countries. Throughout his career, he supported military operations around the world, including Central and South America, the Balkans, and the Middle East. During his final two years of active duty service, he was the Director for Medical Training Programs for East coast Naval Special Warfare units.
Byron is a member of the International Association of Emergency Managers, Michigan Emergency Management Association (serving on the Board as District 1 Liaison since 2007), International Association for Security and Safety, and the Michigan Healthcare Safety Association.
Married to his wonderful wife Letticia for ten years, they will have four children under the age of five in 2010. Byron enjoys spending his “off-time” with his family doing a variety of activities! Additionally, he spends time supporting a family run organization that provides baked goods to homeless shelters as the “web-not-so-master” and business operations manager.
