The April 28 issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report" features the report "Health Hazard Evaluation of Police Officers and Firefighters After Hurricane Katrina - New Orleans, Louisiana, October 17-28 and November 30-December 5, 2005." Approximately one third of the respondents in the evaluation reported either depressive symptoms, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, or both.

2006 National Hurricane Operations Plan

The Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference meets annually to bring together the responsible federal agencies and other stakeholders to review the nation's hurricane forecast and warning program and to discuss recommendations for improving preparedness for the upcoming hurricane season. The updated plan incorporates new procedures, procedural changes, and agreements reached at the 2006 conference and is available for free online from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research.

Employers and employees involved in cleanup and recovery efforts following natural disasters will benefit from a new "tool" developed by OSHA and the Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). The 2006 Disaster Preparation Resources CD features a compilation of resources from OSHA, ASSE, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency on ensuring safe and healthful response and recovery operations. Family Preparedness

"Getting Ready for Disaster - One Family's Experience"

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has been released to help people get ready for disasters that may impact their families and communities. The DVD guides viewers through important steps of disaster preparedness and addresses critical issues in seven segments: Getting Informed, Making a Plan, Assembling a Disaster Supplies Kit, Food and Water in an Emergency, Helping Children Cope with Disaster, Disability and Special Needs Populations, and Getting Involved - Citizen Corps. The DVD was designed to be used with "Are You Ready? An In-Depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness" and the accompanying facilitator manual for teaching preparedness principles in small group or classroom settings.

Free copies of the DVD (FEMA 500) and the Are You Ready guides (IS-22 and IS-22FG) are available through the FEMA Distribution Center at (800) 480-2520. Requests are currently limited to one DVD per caller. In the coming months, the DVD will be translated into Spanish and will be available in both languages on a single DVD. Video files, a transcript, and the guide can also be downloaded from http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/

Disasters and Case Studies

The report is volume one in a series detailing post-Katrina field investigations by the MCEER team. The study examines New Orleans hospital decision-making as it relates to disaster preparedness and emergency response, and focuses on the 15 acute care hospitals that were the primary providers of patient care in the New Orleans area before the hurricane struck.
